It was fantastic to see so many volunteers gathered in the Council Chamber last night for our annual CVS Volunteer Awards Evening! Over 80 volunteers were nominated by organisations in recognition of their outstanding contribution and vital work across West Lancs.

We heard moving stories from the volunteers themselves about how volunteering has improved their wellbeing, self-worth and social connections, as well as developing new skills and helping others.
Some described their volunteering as a ‘lifechanging journey’ and that they ‘feel privileged to be part of something that makes such a difference’.

Another speaker described their team of volunteers as a ‘truly strong, close-knit team of remarkable women who have unwavering dedication to our (uniformed) groups’. She thanked them for ‘pouring their hearts into making sure the girls have the very best experiences’.

Special mention goes to Joe Nelson who was nominated by Skelmersdale Junior Football League for his FIFTY years of voluntary service, working with 1000s youngsters aged 6-16.

The awards were presented by the Mayor Cllr Anne Fennell (accompanied by Mayoress Cllr Sarah Lawton) who said  ‘Sarah and I are both volunteers too so we understand the work you do. Our residents need it in these challenging times, and we’re grateful for your contribution’.

Thanks too to our CVS Executive Trustee Vic Citarella who opened and closed the event.

It was a truly inspiring evening, recognising the often unseen work of volunteers and the difference they make to thousands of lives across the Borough.
